Data Manipulation

Location tracking also leaves room for the scary topic of data manipulation to come into play. Data Manipulation to Produce Unethical Results is a real fear in the scientific community and should be for the American people as well. With data,  especially with location data, databases have the ability to pinpoint where someone was, who they were with, when they were there, and what they were doing. However, while the data is accurate, it can be used unethically to create a situation that did not happen. For example, if location services show that two people were at the same coffee shop at the same time, the data can be used to assume they were together. But, they could have just been two strangers who were at a coffee shop at the same time. This would make the assumption based on the data incorrect! This is a simple and harmless assumption, but assumptions like this can be detrimental if this data is being used by the government. Police have already begun using location data to help find suspects and solve crimes. In a case that took place in Phoenix, police had all leads go cold on discovering who had shot a man nine months earlier. Google gave the police access to one of their suspects location history and the police were able to pinpoint this man to the location of the shooting that happened NINE months ago. In the end, the police ended up releasing this man because there was no other evidence to tie him to the shooting aside from his location. If data becomes manipulated to paint a picture that police want to fill to end a case, then innocent people can be convicted!
